If you’ve never been to our practice in Brentwood, we can help guide you there! Starting from the West Hollywood Library, you could:
- Take the scenic route by heading north on San Vincente Blvd, then turning left onto Sunset Blvd and following its many bends for 7.3 miles, then turn left onto Westgate Ave, then right onto Kearsarge St, left onto Saltair Ave, and finally left onto San Vincente Blvd. Our office is only a couple of buildings down on the right, at 11980 San Vicente Blvd # 600.
- Alternatively, you could take San Vincente and then turn left onto Santa Monica Blvd. Follow that for 4.3 miles, then turn right onto Sepulveda Blvd. Turn left onto Wilshire blvd, then right onto San Vincente Blvd. Continue around the curve, then make a U-turn at the intersection with Saltair Ave and watch for us coming up fast on your right!
How Much Local History Do You Know?
West Hollywood’s rich history begins in the late 18th century with the arrival of Portuguese explorer João Rodrigues Cabrilho, who claimed the region for Spain. The local Tongva tribe, known for their dance and courage, were the original inhabitants. By 1771, the Spanish mission system had significantly impacted the Tongva, renaming them “Gabrielinos” after the Mission de San Gabriel. Early Spanish explorers, including Gaspar de Portola in 1770, utilized the area’s natural resources, such as tar pits for waterproofing their supplies.
By 1780, the route known today as “Sunset Strip” was the main thoroughfare linking El Pueblo de Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean. Over the next century, this land, part of the vast Rancho La Brea, changed hands several times.
In the late 19th century, the area known as “Sherman,” later to become West Hollywood, emerged around the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad, founded by Moses Sherman. This area developed a reputation as a loosely regulated, liquor-friendly haven during Prohibition, attracting the film industry and leading to the construction of unique apartment buildings and hotels. Despite several annexation attempts, Sherman remained independent of Los Angeles and was renamed “West Hollywood” in 1925, though it stayed under county governance.
Throughout the 20th century, West Hollywood became renowned for its vibrant nightlife along Sunset Boulevard, hosting casinos and nightclubs immune to the strict law enforcement of Los Angeles. The area also attracted a significant Russian Jewish population post-Soviet Union dissolution, adding to its cultural diversity.
In 1975, West Hollywood saw the inception of The Gauntlet, the first dedicated body piercing business in the U.S., marking the start of the body piercing industry. The city continued to evolve, maintaining its status as a hub for entertainment and a beacon for diverse cultures and industries.
