Directions to Our Practice

If you’ve never been over to our practice, here are two easy routes to follow from the Culver City Julian Dixon Library.

  1. Start by heading northwest on Overland Ave, then turn left onto Culver Blvd. Get onto the 405 heading north, then exit onto Wilshire Blvd and go left under the freeway. Turn right onto San Vincente Blvd. Follow the curve, then make a U-turn at Vincente Foods. We’ll be coming up fast on your right, at 11980 San Vicente Blvd # 600.
  2. If you’d rather avoid the 405 (we don’t blame you), stay on Overland Ave all the way until I-10 and take the cloverleaf on-ramp on the right to go westbound. Exit at 2C and turn right onto Bundy Dr. Stay on that around a couple of tight bends for just over 2 miles, then turn right onto San Vincente and watch for us on the right.

How Much Local History Do You Know?

Nestled in the vibrant landscape of Los Angeles County, Culver City stands as a testament to visionary beginnings and cultural evolution. Founded in 1913 by Harry Culver and officially incorporated in 1917, the city was strategically positioned to benefit from pre-existing transportation routes, famously encapsulated in Culver’s early advertisements declaring, “All roads lead to Culver City.”

From its inception, Culver City quickly became a focal point for the burgeoning film industry. In 1918, Thomas Ince established the first film studio for The Triangle Motion Picture Company. This was closely followed by silent film comedy producer Hal Roach, who opened his studios in 1919, and by 1924, the iconic Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) had taken over the Triangle studio complex. The city also played host to speakeasies and nightclubs like the Cotton Club during Prohibition, adding a lively edge to its cultural fabric.

The mid-20th century saw further industrial growth with the establishment of the Hughes Aircraft Company in 1941. The company, which produced the famous H-4 Hercules transport—also known as the “Spruce Goose” — became a significant player in the aerospace industry during and after World War II.

As Culver City moved into the latter half of the century, it continued to innovate and grow. Culver Center, one of Southern California’s first shopping malls, was completed in 1950, marking another milestone in the city’s development. The city’s aerospace and entertainment industries also underwent significant transformations, with Howard Hughes donating all his stock in Hughes Aircraft to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1953, turning it into a powerhouse of medical research funding after his death.

The landscape of Culver City underwent dramatic changes in the late 20th century, particularly with the demolition of the Hal Roach Studios in 1963 and the subsequent redevelopment of historic studio lots. The revitalization efforts extended into the 1990s and 2000s, with the city renovating its downtown area and enhancing the Sepulveda Boulevard corridor near Westfield Culver City. This era also saw Sony’s motion picture subsidiaries, Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures, moving into the former MGM lot, now known as Sony Pictures Studios.

Today, Culver City continues to embrace its heritage while fostering a thriving arts scene, evidenced by the bustling Culver City Art District. This dynamic blend of history, art, and industry makes Culver City not just a historical landmark but a continual source of innovation and culture.
